RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Psoas Minor (PMi) is the most unstable muscle of the psoas group of the posterior abdominal muscle. This muscle has a fusiform shape and consists of a short fusiform belly continuing distally as a long tendon inserted on the pecten pubis and the iliopectineal arch. The present study was conducted to obtain more detailed information about the muscle and to expand knowledge about its morphology and morphometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The posterior abdominal wall of 30 adult cadavers was dissected. Anatomical variabilities in origin, insertion, length, width, and muscle-to-cone ratio were measured when PMi was found. The data collected was interpreted descriptively. RESULTS: PMi was found in 12 cases, ten bilateral and two unilateral. The origin was constant in all cases and, except for three cases, extended into the iliac fascia and the iliopubic eminence. Morphometric analysis revealed that the average length of the proximal muscle belly and distal tendons was 4.52 ± 1.35 cm and 13.05 ± 0.90 cm, respectively. The mean width of the muscle belly was 1.71 ± 0.17 cm, and that of the tendon was 0.47 ± 0.10 cm. On average, the muscle belly occupied the proximal 33.71 ± 6.15% of the total musculotendinous unit. CONCLUSIONS: Findings confirm the inconsistency of PMi in the study population. Morphological variations became more evident as the tendon approached the insertion level. The muscle's distal attachment to the iliac fascia may partially control the position, mechanical stability of the underlying iliopsoas and this circumstantial function may be clinically related to iliopsoas inflammation and pathology. However, further studies recommended to determine biomechanical validity and clinical applicability of this vestigial muscle in human.

Background: The lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lives of children and resulted in behavioral and emotional disturbances in children. This study was planned to identify the prevalence of these problems in Indian children. The aim of the study was to estimate the effect of lockdown on the neurobehavioral profile of children 6-12 years of age by using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scale. CBCL is the most widely used validated scientific tool to detect behavioral and emotional problems in children. Materials and Methods: All children 6-12 years of age who were fulfilling the inclusion criteria of the study were included from all over India through an online Google form link. The children attending the outpatient department (OPD) at our tertiary-level care medical college were also included in offline mode. Data were collected and entered in an Excel sheet and analyzed statistically. Results: A total of 173 children in the age group 6-12 years were enrolled. The mean standard deviation (SD) age of all children was 8.88 (1.84) years, out of which males were of a mean age of 9.2 (1.84) years and females were 8.44 (1.74) years. Total CBCL T-scores (mean (SD)) for internalizing, externalizing, and total scores were 63.07 (7.98), 63.95 (6.51), and 62.39 (4.9), respectively. Conclusion: Lockdown has resulted in neurobehavioral changes in normal children. The independent predictors found were the increase in screen-based media use, sleep issues, or behavioral changes like aggression due to restriction of their mobility or confinement. Females exhibited more internalizing problems, and males exhibited more externalizing problems.

The exocrine part of the pancreas has a duct system called the pancreatic ductal system (PDS). Its mechanism of development is complex, and any reorganization during early embryogenesis can give rise to anatomical variants. The aim of this study is to collect, classify, and analyze published evidence on the importance of anatomical variants of the PDS, addressing gaps in our understanding of such variations. The MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were searched to identify publications relevant to this review. R studio with meta-package was used for data extraction, risk of bias estimation, and statistical analysis. A total of 64 studies out of 1,778 proved suitable for this review and metanalysis. The meta-analysis computed the prevalence of normal variants of the PDS (92% of 10,514 subjects). Type 3 variants and "descending" subtypes of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) predominated in the pooled samples. The mean lengths of the MPD and accessory pancreatic duct (APD) were 16.53 cm and 3.36 cm, respectively. The mean diameters of the MPD at the head and the APD were 3.43 mm and 1.69 mm, respectively. The APD was present in only 41% of samples, and the long type predominated. The pancreatic ductal anatomy is highly variable, and the incorrect identification of variants may be challenging for surgeons during ductal anastomosis with gut, failure to which may often cause ductal obstruction or pseudocysts formation.

This dilemma arises from the inherent tension between the educational responsibilities of imparting knowledge and the scholarly pursuits of generating new knowledge. In this commentary, we seek to explore the question of whether teachers or researchers should take precedence in the medical academic setting.

RESUMEN

The microscope has revolutionized the understanding of an organism's structural details and cellular functions. With the invention of highly evolved microscopes, the diagnosis and treatment of diseases has gained momentum. Technology has immensely helped demonstrate cellular events like phagocytosis, cell movement, cell division, etc. with enhanced temporal and spatial resolution. One of these advanced inventions is the fluorescent microscope which has enabled scanning through various physiological activities of the cell. A fluorescence microscope uses the property of fluorescence to create an image. In addition to visualizing the structural details of the cells, a fluorescence microscope also aids in witnessing cellular activities. With an immunofluorescence microscope, cellular antigens can be localized. This chapter highlights the basics of microscopy, types of microscopes, principles, and types of fluorescence microscopes, and recent advances in microscopy and its application.

In the post-pandemic era, one of the significant challenges for anatomy teachers is to reciprocate the experience of practical exposure while teaching the subject to undergraduates. These challenges span from conducting cadaveric dissections to handling real human bones, museum specimens, and tissue sections in the histology lab. Such exposures help the instructors to develop interactive communication with their fellow students and thus help to enhance communication skills among them. Recently, anatomy teachers all over the world started using cutting-edge educational technologies to make teaching-learning experiences for students more engaging, interesting, and interactive. Utilizing such cutting-edge educational technologies was an "option" prior to the pandemic, but the pandemic has significantly altered the situation. What was previously an "option" is now a "compulsion." Despite the fact that the majority of medical schools have resumed their regular on-campus classes, body donation and the availability of cadavers remain extremely limited, resulting in a deadlock. Anatomy teachers must incorporate cutting-edge educational technologies into their teaching and learning activities to make the subject more visual. In this chapter, we have attempted to discuss various new technologies which can provide a near-realistic perception of anatomical structures as a complementary tool for dissection/cadaver, various visualization techniques currently available and explore their importance as a pedagogic alternative in learning anatomy. We also discussed the recent advancement in visualization techniques and the pros and cons of technology-based visualization. This chapter identifies the limitations of technology-based visualization as a supplement and discusses effective utilization as an adjunct to the conventional pedagogical approaches to undergraduate anatomy education.

PURPOSE: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is the most critical structure in terms of intricacy. Anatomic variations of the nerve may further make thyroid surgery cumbersome. The present study was undertaken to provide comprehensive knowledge about the soundness of commonly used anatomical landmarks such as Berry's ligament (BL), tracheo-esophageal groove (TEG), inferior thyroid artery (ITA), and the midpoint of the posterior border of the thyroid gland in the identification of the nerve intraoperatively. METHODS: Thirty adult cadavers were dissected to identify the RLN in the neck and to locate it in relation to the aforementioned anatomical landmarks. RESULTS: The RLN/BL relationship: RLN was most often located superficial to the BL (88.3%), followed by deep to the BL in 8.4%, and piercing the BL in 3.3% of cases, respectively. The RLN/TEG relationship: the RLN was located inside the TEG in most cases (71.7%), followed by RLN lying outside the TEG in 28.3%. Outside the groove, it was most commonly found lateral to the TEG (64.7%). RLN/ITA relationship: the nerve was passing deep to the artery in most of the cases (65%), followed by superficial (30%) and rarely (5%) in-between the branches. RLN/ midpoint posterior border of thyroid relationship: In 57 (95%) cases, RLN was coursing in the area posterior to the midpoint of the posterior border of the gland with an average distance of 4.95 ± 2.23 mm ranging between 2.21 and 12.1 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Both the BL and TEG are potentially crucial for safeguarding RLN. Although in results, BL turns out to be more consistent than TEG, we propose the utilization of both these anatomical landmarks together for complication-free neck surgeries. Furthermore, the midpoint of the posterior border of the thyroid turns out to be the single most consistent landmark for identifying RLN during partial thyroidectomy.

The inferior alveolar nerve and vessels are carried via the mandibular canal, which extends bilaterally from the inferior alveolar foramen to the mental foramen. Bifid and trifid mandibular canals result from abnormal fusions of nerve canals. The purpose of this study was to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive analysis of the prevalence of mandibular canal variations among healthy adults, and to identify any potential ethnic, sex, or laterality predilections. The prevalence of the bifid mandibular canal was 18.87% and that of the trifid canal 1.3%. Unilateral variants were three times commoner than bilateral. Each mandibular half had four canals emanating from separate openings on the lingual surface of the mandibular ramus. Retromolar and forward canals were the predominant subtypes, followed by dental; buccolingual were the least frequent. The mean length and diameter of the bifid mandibular canal were 13.62 mm and 1.63 mm, respectively. The possibility of a bifid mandibular canal is a crucial consideration in dental medicine. Because anatomical variations of the mandibular canal are fairly common, awareness of them is essential for anatomy teachers and for surgeons who operate in the oromaxillofacial region.

Background Interthalamic adhesion (ITA) or massa intermedia is a midline rod-like neural structure interconnecting the medial surfaces of two thalami. Its absence is considered as a midline defect associated with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence, location, and dimensions of the ITA in South Asian brains. Materials and Methods One hundred midsagittal sections of adult cadaveric brains were examined for the presence or absence of ITAs, their location about the lateral wall of the third ventricle, and their dimensions. Results ITA was found in 86 sections. In two cases, it was double. There was no significant relationship between the incidence of ITAs and sex ( p > 0.05). The ITA was most commonly located in the anterosuperior quadrant. The horizontal diameter was 4.61 ± 1.17 mm, and the vertical diameter was 3.10 ± 0.78 mm. In all cases, the horizontal diameter was longer than the vertical. The average area of the ITA was significantly larger in females (17.56 ± 5.26 mm 2 ) than in males (13.62 ± 5.22 mm 2 ) ( p = 0.025). Conclusion Presence of ITA is common in South Asian brains, with usual location in the anterosuperior quadrant of the lateral wall of the third ventricle. The cross-sectional area of the ITA was significantly larger in females than in males. No correlation was found between the surface area of the ITA and the length of the third ventricle.

INTRODUCTION: Applications based on artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming more popular in teaching learning. Advanced technologies have facilitated robots to carry out various human-like functions, which have navigated the interest of educators to discover the role of robots as potential teachers, instructors, or teaching assistants in education. METHODS: An extensive search for articles for humanoid robots and education either in the title or keywords was done utilizing PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science data sets. The tracking terms were artificial intelligence, education, medical education, anatomy, robots, humanoid robots, teaching, teaching assistant and tutor. RESULTS: The usage of artificial intelligence in the form of humanoid robots is quite common. However, literature citing its usage in medical education is rare. Humanoid robots as a teacher or teaching assistants are predominantly used in learning foreign languages. Primarily, a humanoid robot can discharge five functions as a potential teacher. CONCLUSION: Humanoid robots can effectively fulfil numerous educational goals in medicine since they can replicate human responses, work relentlessly regardless of students' repeated mistakes, be loaded with innovative teaching methodologies, and be upgraded with more current information. As a subject of medicine, anatomy is highly visual; therefore, constant endeavors have been initiated to develop technology-enhanced learning over the decades. Although artificial intelligence in humanoid robots has been successfully used in primary education and in learning a foreign language, its scope as an anatomy teacher or teaching assistant is a new and unique idea that needs exploration.

This questionnaire-based study was conducted to assess screen-based media use during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in children (n=278) aged between 1 to 12 years. Television was the most common media available for use (246, 88.5%), and mobile was the next most commonly available media (230, 82.7%). Daily screen time exposure and use of television (P<0.001), computer/Laptop (P<0.001), and tablet (P=0.001) were significantly more common in those aged 5-12 years. Majority (214, 76.9%) were using screen-based media for educational purposes.

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is the most common endocrinological abnormality found in children. The incidence of T1DM has steadily increased in nearly all parts of the world. Both genetic susceptibility and environmental factors contribute to the pathogenesis. It is caused due to either decreased or absent insulin production in the body due to multiple etiologies. We have done a literature review of type 1 DM in children and a clinical audit of point prevalence of type 1 DM cases & its clinical correlates of patients presenting at the tertiary level hospital, AIIMS Rishikesh, over two years six months period (April 2015 to September 2017). We found the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (Type 1) is 2.88%. Among clinical features at presentation, 56.5% presented with polyuria, 34.8% with polydipsia, 21.7% with polyphagia, 39.1% with weight loss. 26.1% of patients had diabetic ketoacidosis at presentation. The majority of children have deranged HbA1C levels (94.4%). It is concluded that children presented with higher HbA1c levels at onset and higher duration of symptoms are at greater risk for the development of complications.

Human cadaveric donors are essential for research in the anatomical sciences. However, many research papers in the anatomical sciences often omit a statement regarding the ethical use of the donor cadavers or, as no current standardized versions exist, use language that is extremely varied. To rectify this issue, 22 editors-in-chief of anatomical journals, representing 17 different countries, developed standardized and simplified language that can be used by authors of studies that use human cadaveric tissues. The goal of these editor recommendations is to standardize the writing approach by which the ethical use of cadaveric donors is acknowledged in anatomical studies that use donor human cadavers. Such sections in anatomical papers will help elevate our discipline and promote standardized language use in others non anatomy journals and also other media outlets that use cadaveric tissues.

The evolution and variations of human anatomy are of great interest to physicians and anatomists. Variations can be categorized as vestigial, accessory or atavistic structures. Vestigial muscles are frequently encountered structures that are normally present but have become rudimentary through evolution. Muscles that disappeared during evolution sometimes arise again, although rarely; such muscles are referred to as atavistic. They arise from failure of suppression of genetic loci. Some common atavistic muscles seen clinically are the extensor digitorum brevis manus, chondroepitrochlearis and plantaris. Atavistic muscles appear more frequently in the upper limb than in any other region of the human body. One explanation for the appearance of these muscles, mainly within the upper limbs, is based on the evolution of the complex upper extremities formed in humans today. Often, the presence of atavistic muscles is asymptomatic, but they can compromise the function of normal anatomical structures and complicate clinical situations if their presence is unknown. They can cause complications if they are confused with soft tissue pathology, if they compress or displace surrounding structures, or if they require an additional blood supply during times of exercise and stress. The purpose of this paper was to describe the common atavistic muscles, their hypothesized evolutionary origins, their potential complications and possible treatments for the diagnosing clinician.

Our aim was to clarify the variations in the positional relationship between the base of the lateral plate of the pterygoid process and the foramen ovale (FO), which block inserted needles during percutaneous procedures to the FO usually used for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Ninety skulls were examined. The horizontal relationship between the FO and the posterior border of the base of the lateral plate of the pterygoid process was observed in an inferior view of the skull base. Skulls that showed injury to either the FO or the lateral plate of the pterygoid process on either side were excluded. One hundred and sixty sides of eighty skulls were eligible. The relationship between the FO and the posterior border of the base of the lateral plate was classified into four types. Among the 160 sides, type III (direct type) was the most common (35%), followed by type I (lateral type, 29%) and type IV (removed type, 21%); type II (medial type) was the least common (15%). Of the 80 specimens, 53 showed the same type bilaterally. In type IV, the posterior border of the base of the lateral plate is disconnected from the FO, so percutaneous procedures for treating trigeminal neuralgia could fail in patients with this type.

COVID-19 pandemic has created a lot of turmoil in medical teaching, the magnitude of impact is many folds in the subject of anatomy, as it is practical based. A major challenge for anatomy teachers is to replicate the experience of practical exposures. These exposures range from cadaveric dissection to demonstration of bones, museum specimens, and histology slides, where they will have interactive communication with students, and thus help in the enhancement of communication and clinical skills among them. In recent days, anatomy teachers throughout the globe started using various advanced technology to make the teaching-learning session more interesting. In pre-pandemic era, usage of such advancements in information and communication technology was a 'choice'. But pandemic has changed the situation drastically, what was a 'choice' earlier is now an 'obligation.' Presently although infection rate is low, vaccination rate is high, most of the medical schools re-opened for usual offline teaching, still body donation is all time low making the situation 'back to square one'. Keeping such unprecedented situations in mind, we need to incorporate various innovative educational technologies in day-to-day teaching-learning methodologies.

CONTEXT: Diarrhoea is the most prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality among children aged under five years. To address this, an education programme is administered. AIM: To assess the effectiveness of a structured educational programme over knowledge of ORS. METHODS AND MATERIAL: 60 mothers aged (18-35 years) of under five-year children were enrolled in this experimental quantitative study by non-probability purposive sampling method. A pre-test and post-test questionnaire administered to a group of mothers. Statistical analysis Paired t-test & Chi-Square test were applied whereas appliable. RESULTS: This study showed a mean improvement of 7.36 (36.85%) in the score of pre-test and post-test as the mean score of the pre-test is 9.37 ± 4.96, and the mean score of post-test is 16.73 ± 2.97, respectively, which reveals that there is a significant improvement in the knowledge of the mothers after the structured educational program on ORS therapy. CONCLUSION: It is drawn from this study that a structured teaching programme was effective significantly in improving mothers' knowledge regarding oral rehydration therapy.

PURPOSE: Injury to the radial nerve is not an uncommon phenomenon in fracture displacement of distal humerus and its operative management as the nerve is immobile and superficial at its point of entry into the anterior compartment and in close proximity to humerus. Such injuries can be reduced by defining a 'safe area' for the radial nerve in relation to the triceps aponeurosis in the distal humerus. METHODS: Radial nerve was dissected in 40 arms and distance of the nerve from triceps aponeurosis was measured at five sites; first one at the level of proximal or medial apex of aponeurosis, followed by four sites along its lateral border. These distances were analyzed to identify its location and to define a 'safe area' in relation to the triceps aponeurosis in the distal humerus. RESULTS: In majority of cases (67.50%), the point of entry of radial nerve into anterior compartment was at the level of proximal or medial apex at a mean distance of 2.11 ± 0.31 cm. The mean distance of radial nerve from the lateral border of triceps aponeurosis was 1.98 ± 0.60 cm with a range of 1.00-2.50 cm. The closest distance between the nerve and the aponeurosis was found to be 1.00 cm at the level of distal or lateral apex. CONCLUSION: The relationship between radial nerve and triceps aponeurosis is constant and easily reproducible. It is suggested that the rectangular zone immediately adjoining the lateral border of aponeurosis (< 1.00 cm) can be considered "safe" for soft tissue dissection while surgically approaching distal humeral fractures.
